# Why a Google review was removed

A review was there and now it is gone. These are the policies Google removes reviews under, and the one case where it comes back.

## Quick answer

Google removes reviews that break its content policies, and says reviews removed for policy violations will not be restored. The policies that catch most reviews are fake or incentivised content, off-topic commentary and harassment.

## Check this first

- [ ] Check the review is actually gone rather than delayed: look at the profile signed out, sorted by newest.
- [ ] Check whether the profile was suspended or reinstated around the same date.
- [ ] Check how the review was asked for — whether anything was offered in return.

## Causes

### It is still being checked, not removed

- Status: Check first - Usually resolves itself. Check, then wait.
- Google says reviews are checked to ensure that they comply with its policies, and that in some cases this might take a few days.
- Fix: Wait a few days before treating it as removed.

### The profile was reinstated after a suspension

- Status: Platform’s call - Only the platform can change it. Report or appeal.
- Google says reviews might sometimes be removed after a Business Profile is reinstated.
- Fix: Nothing on your side. Raise it with Google support, pointing at the reinstatement date.

### It was fake, or not based on a real experience

- Status: Can’t be fixed - The platform’s rules say no. We say so plainly.
- Google's content policy says contributions to Google Maps should reflect a genuine experience at a place or business, and bars fake and misleading content and behaviour.
- Fix: Nothing to do. A review that was never a real visit will not be reinstated.

### Something was offered in return for it

- Status: Can’t be fixed - The platform’s rules say no. We say so plainly.
- Google's policy bars fake engagement and rating manipulation, and Google says offering incentives, such as free or discounted goods or services, in exchange for reviews is considered fake engagement and is strictly prohibited — including posting, changing or removing negative reviews.
- Fix: Nothing to do about the removed review. Change how you ask: no incentive, no rating filter, the same request to everyone.

### It was off-topic

- Status: Can’t be fixed - The platform’s rules say no. We say so plainly.
- Google's policy bars off-topic content: general, political or social commentary that is not about the place.
- Fix: Nothing to do. A review about something other than the visit is outside what Google hosts.

### It was harassment, offensive or carried personal information

- Status: Can’t be fixed - The platform’s rules say no. We say so plainly.
- Google's policy bars harassment, offensive content and the distribution of personal data without consent.
- Fix: Nothing to do, and nothing you would want back.

Checked 2026-10-02.

A review was on the profile, and now there is a gap where it used to be. No notice, no explanation.

The likeliest reason is dull. Google removes reviews that break its content policies, and says reviews removed for policy violations will not be restored. Most of what gets caught is fake or incentivised content, off-topic commentary, or harassment. None of that is about whether the review was fair, or whether anyone disagreed with it.

Sometimes it has not been removed at all and is still being checked, which can take a few days. The checklist below settles that first. The causes after it run in order of who can act, so you can see quickly whether this one is yours.

## Questions people ask

### Can I get a removed review back?

Not if it was removed for a policy violation: Google says those will not be restored.

### Why did a positive review get removed?

The policies are about how a review was made, not what it says. Incentivised and fake reviews are removed whether they are five stars or one.

### Does asking for reviews get them removed?

Asking is fine. Offering something in return is not: Google calls that fake engagement and prohibits it.

### How do I tell removed from delayed?

Wait a few days. Google says the policy check can take that long, so anything newer than that may simply not be through it yet.
